The Rant

A former co-worker coined the phrase when I offered to let her listen to one of my sermons on CD. She said, "Sure, I'll listen to Tom rant about Jesus." At first it sounded funny, but the more I thought about it the more it seemed to fit. That's what we, as preachers, pretty much do. We rant about Jesus. In 1 Corinthians 2:2 the Apostle Paul says, "For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified." That's it. Jesus. Who He is, and what He did, and what it means for us. That's my job, or calling, or anointing. To preach Christ. Jesus is in every book of the Bible. The entire volume speaks of Him. If you don't see Jesus, you're looking at it wrong.

So that's what I'm going to continue to do in this forum: Rant about Jesus.

My hope is to Rant every night by 9:00 pm, so check daily for new blogs.

Fresh Start part 5

12/16/2016 15:32
Sometimes you think you've gone too far. You get caught up in something and then you look around and you don't even know where you are anymore. I think that's a pretty common thing in this life. But here's the truth of the matter: God allows U-turns. In fact, He encourages them. He did the biggest...

Fresh Start part 4

12/15/2016 14:32
I think one of the most important things about what happened at the cross is that Jesus not only gave His life FOR us, but He gave His life TO us. So when we're talking about a fresh start, we're not talking about someone just hitting the reset button so we can have a do-over. And that's a good...

Fresh Start part 3

I can't think of anything more liberating that forgiveness. True forgiveness. Not, "I'll forgive, but I'll never forget." Not, "Just as if I'd never sinned." But a total and complete fresh start. As Hebrews 10:2 puts it, "Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, because the worshipers,...

Fresh Start part 2

"I already know I'm going to hell, so who cares?" The statement--because that's what it was, a matter-of-fact statement--shocked me. And not just because I totally and completely disagree with every single bit of it. But because someone I love had totally and completely given up. They had let their...

Fresh Start part 1

My Bible case says, "God allows U-turns." And I always add, "In fact, He encourages them." So that's what I want to look at for the next few days. Because sometimes it seems like we're stuck. Stuck in a rut--once again, a grave with the ends kicked out--or stuck on a certain path. But I'm telling...

Faith Walking part 5

12/11/2016 15:16
Faith walking is the opposite of sleepwalking. When--before the cross--we were asleep at the wheel, we were dead in our trespasses and sins. We were trapped in the lie of unbelief. The lie that says we have to do in order to be. The lie that says we have to earn our bread by the sweat of our brow....

Faith Walking part 4

12/10/2016 16:58
Sleepwalking is abiding in death. Before the cross we were dead in our trespasses and sins. It's not believing that we are loved, and looking for love in all the wrong places. The opposite of that is faith walking. Walking by faith and not by (natural) sight. Seeing the things that are unseen. The...

Faith Walking part 3

Seeing is believing, right? What you see in the mirror is what you be. What's inside is what comes out. So why does our key verse, 2 Corinthians 5:7, "For we walk by faith, not by sight," seem to make that distinction? Well, the short answer is found one chapter earlier. 2 Corinthians 4:18, "While...

Faith Walking part 2

12/08/2016 14:23
Walking by faith is living by believing. It's like this, "Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him" (Hebrews 2:8). All things ARE under our feet....

Faith Walking part 1

12/07/2016 15:35
If before the cross we were sleepwalking--dead in our trespasses and sins, and trying to be someone we're not because we didn't know who we were, because we didn't know who God was--then on THIS side of the cross we are faith walking. Which is exactly what 2 Corinthians 5:7 says, "For we walk by...
